No Talent Needed.

Initially it is your teacher who requires the talent. Kathy Shell is an award winning artist and author of multi mediums and subjects with over 50 years professional painting experience. All she requires of her students initially is the desire to learn from a teacher who will demonstrate how and explain why and constructively critique your own work. Kathy does not waste your time or money by giving hobby classes. Kathy Shell teaches because she LOVES to teach people who want to learn. These are not classes for those who are just seeking a social gathering to paint in with just a little assistance. This is the right way to learn if you are eager for 'more,' than a hobby class. Your work will develop steadily as you learn in an environment that nurtures the artist in you. Kathy Shell is herself an active author artist.

Tuition Enrollment: As students book private or semi-private lessons, demonstration tutorial classes are at flexible class times and may be arranged on an individual basis between student and Kathy Shell, your tutor. Fee is payable on booking.

Mooroopna Studio. Let’s enjoy our lessons in a safe and comfortable environment.
No Lessons held during heatwaves and winter. Lessons canceled due to heatwaves are extended forward. Students with colds or flu are requested to stay home. Kathy Shell would prefer to offer a makeup lesson in the event of contagious illness rather than have a student infect others. Absolutely no toxic materials allowed to be used in the studio. There is a clean air policy. No turps, no thinners, no varnish and no pastel dust. Those things are for use out of doors and away from other people. Kathy Shell will instruct on how to handle art materials safely.

REALISTIC PAINTING with KATHY SHELL.

Kathy Shell teaches the classic artist studio methods of the Old Masters. Students will train the eye to see value, form and colour by working from a still life. Start by using in black and white and learn to see and paint tonal value, shape and correct proportion and placement then progress to colour in oils. Principles of composition and design are taught. Knowledge of tools and materials will be emphasized. Instructor is traditionally trained.

STUDIO LANDSCAPE PAINTING with KATHY SHELL.

Beginner to advanced welcomed. Students will be working from their own on location oil paintings, sketches, drawings, and photos, and learn what it takes to create an oil landscape painting (any size). Kathy will show examples of her work and provide demos, short lectures and lots of encouragement while you work on your own projects and style. Highly informative class and find new freedom in approaching landscapes painting. Students may work in oils, watercolours or acrylics.

LOOSE & LIVELY WATERCOLOR with KATHY SHELL

Beginning to advanced. Students work in watercolours while learning Kathy’s impressionistic approach to painting. Learn colour mixing, composition, design, wc techniques and more. Bring your own projects to work on during class—Photos or from life fine. Develop your own style while learning to loosen up!

ACRYLIC MAGIC with KATHY SHELL.

Have you wanted to take your acrylic painting to the next level? Do you wonder about working in acrylics and other water media! Do you want something more creative and energetic in your art? Then this is the class you've been looking for! Kathy explores creativity in acrylic & acrylic gouache painting media to create beautiful, energetic works. All Levels welcomed as she works with students individually to move their art to the next level

PASTELS WITH PERSONALITY with KATHY.

Beginner to Advanced students welcomed. Work on your own subject of choice. Guidance will be given in setting up a still life, selecting and editing of photos or sketches for a painting. Create exciting backgrounds. Add personality and energy to your work. Lay-in techniques, layering pastels and creating interest. Demos. Free your inner artist.

IMPRESSIONS IN OIL PAINTING with KATHY SHELL

Students will learn as they paint about the properties and techniques of working in oils. Kathy Shell works alongside students for a full demo of the painting process from beginning to end in each class. Impressionistic in approach to still life and flower studies, students will receive training in set up, design, composition, lay-ins, colour mixing, brush work techniques, materials.

Two hour on site painting demonstrations offered to Kathy Shell 6 session booking students, FREE in the same week as their paid studio class. BYO materials, easel, sun hat, sunscreen, protective clothing, drink, snack and transport. This is an art demonstration by Kathy Shell rather than an art lesson. Lessons are conducted in the studio.
You may book an on location painting lesson for a regular studio class fee if not attending the studio classes or wanting assistance with your own on site landscape painting.

How will you progress through lessons with Kathy Shell?
Private or semi-private lessons with two compatable students, progressing together, under the guidance of a trained artist, is the optimum way to learn.
Please note, ALL students begin at the beginning - the correct place to start with any new tutor.
The only exception to this is if you choose to pay a masterclass rather than a student's fee.
Just like a musician has to learn the scales first, so Kathy Shell's art students will progress at thier own speed, step by easy step, the training will involve, learning to see tone (light and shade) and its shape and placement prior to advancing to colour.
Though doing the basic training, they become better artists than if they try to start by just copying a pretty picture in paints.
The fist method, (the way Kathy Shell teaches) makes you (over time,) an artist.
The latter keeps you a hobby painter for life.

Are Kathy Shell's demonstration tutorial and constructive critique style private or semi-private lessons, right for me?
Kathy Shell's art tuition is for those who are eager to learn and want to be good at what they do. These lessons are designed for people who are not seeking a social outing or large class and would not be content just copying (breaking copyright) works by other artists/writers in a hobby class and understand that copying is a craft anyone can learn whereas becoming a skilled artist or creative writer required your desire to seek out good training.

Students, who live some distance away, may be able to fit the six x three hour lessons into a long weekend package or enquire about when Kathy Shell is painting in your area and could include tutoring arrangement.
